Moerewa is bounded by the locality of Pokere-Waihaha and State Highway 1 in the north, the locality of Pokere-Waihaha in the east and south, and Pokapu Road, the locality of Ngapuhi-Kaikou, State Highway 1 and Hautapu Road in the west.
Kawakawa is named from Māori words meaning “forest tree or shrub”. Moerewa is named from the Māori words “moe” meaning “to sleep” and “rewa” meaning “to float” or “sleeping like a floating bird”.
