North Cape - Houhora – Awanui is bounded by the Pacific Ocean in the north and east, also the eastern shore of Rangaunu Harbour, Church Road and Purri Block Road in the east, White Road, the locality of Herekino and and Gill Road in the south, and the Tasman Sea in the west. Awanui is located in the southern part of the small area.
North Cape was named by Captain Cook in 1769 to describe the area: the northern-most extremity of New Zealand. Houhora is named from the Māori words “hou” meaning “feathers” and “hora” meaning “spread out”. Awanui is named from the Māori words “awa” meaning “river” and “nui” meaning “large”.
