Pāuatahanui - Paekākāriki Hill is bounded by the Kāpiti Coast District in the north, Upper Hutt City in the east, Hutt City, Belmont Road and Paremata-Haywards Road in the south, and Porirua Harbour, Plimmerton, State Highway 1, Pukerua Bay and the Tasman Sea in the west. While there may be several meanings to the name of Pāuatahanui, it is the original name of the local stream and also means 'big shellfish', reflecting the originally plentiful supplies of shellfish in Porirua Harbour. Paekākāriki Hill is named after Paekākāriki Hill Road which climbs the valley to the north and Paekākāriki translated means 'perching place of the green parakeet'. The Porirua locality of Judgeford is named after Alfred Judge, one of the earliest European settlers in the area.
