The Ashburton District Council area is located in the Canterbury Region, located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a territorial authority encompassing the town of Ashburton and a number of smaller settlements within its surrounding rural area, including Hinds, Mayfield, Methven, Mt Somers and Rakaia. Ashburton District extends from the Canterbury Bight to the Southern Alps, and from the Rangitata River to the Rakaia River. It is bounded by the territoral authorities of Selwyn District, Timaru District and Westland District.
