Kawakawa-Moerewa is a two part area. Kawakawa is bounded by Bridge Street and Railway Road in the north, Whiteman Road and Ruapekapeka Road in the east, the locality of Pokere-Waihaha, Greenacres Drive and Settlement Road in the south, and the locality of Pokere-Waihaha in the west. Moerewa is bounded by the locality of Pokere-Waihaha and State Highway 1 in the north, the locality of Pokere-Waihaha in the east and south, and Pokapu Road, the locality of Ngapuhi-Kaikou, State Highway 1 and Hautapu Road in the west.
Kawakawa is named from Māori words meaning “forest tree or shrub”. Moerewa is named from the Māori words “moe” meaning “to sleep” and “rewa” meaning “to float” or “sleeping like a floating bird”.
