Kaikohe Township is bounded by the locality of Ngapuhi-Kaikou in the west, north and east, and Mangakahia Road, the locality of Ngapuhi-Kaikou and Rangihamama Road in the south.

Kaikohe is named from the Māori word “kaikohekohe”, with “kai” meaning “to eat” and “kohekohe” meaning “a tree”. It was originally known as Opango.
