The 2021 population forecast for Kaitaia Township is 5,722, and is forecast to grow to 7,281 by 2043.
Kaitaia Township is located in two separate sections. The northern section encompasses the locality of Awanui and is bounded by Spains Road in the north, the locality of Motutangi-Kareponia in the east, Prince Street and King Street in the south, and Duke Street, Matarau Road, the Awanui River and the locality of Motutangi-Kareponia in the west. The southern section encompasses the localities of Kaitaia East and Kaitaia West and is bounded by the locality of Herekino in the north, east and south, and Pukepoto Road, the locality of Herekino and North Road in the west.
Kaitaia is thought be named from the Māori word “kaitataia”, with “kai” meaning “food” and “tataia” meaning “arranged or set in order”. Awanui is named from the Māori words “awa” meaning “river” and “nui” meaning “large”.
