Waikanae Beach – Peka Peka is bounded by the area north of Peka Peka Road and the locality of Otaki Forks – Kaitawa – Te Horo to the north, State Highway 1 and the locality of Waikanae Park to the east, the Waikanae River to the south and the Tasman Sea to the west. The place name Waikanae is derived from the river of kanae (mullet) Hau saw while following Wairaka. The place name Peka Peka is Maori for a native New Zealand short tailed bat.
