Paremata-Papakowhai is bounded by the Porirua Harbour in the north and west, Eskdale Road, Whitford Brown Avenue, Ascot Park, Whitby West and Kahu Road to the east, Upper and Lower Cannons Creek and Porirua East-Ranui Heights and Champion Street and Mungavin Avenue in the south. Papakōwhai is is named after the kowhai trees that grew on much of the land around the harbour early in Porirua's history. Streets in Papakōwhai have been named after rivers, waterways, lochs and estuaries in Scotland. Paremata was likely originally named Parramatta by early whalers after the settlement west of Sydney but it was later adapted to the Māori spelling.
