The 2022 population forecast for Greytown is 2,732, and is forecast to grow to 3,581 by 2043.

Greytown is located in the northern part of the South Wairarapa District Council area, and is bounded by the locality of Kahutara and State Highway 2, near the Waiohine River in the north, Papawai Road and the end of Jellicoe Street in the east, Papawai Road, Kemptons Line, Tauherenikau Road in the south and Woodside Road and the railway line in the west. Greytown is named after Governor Sir George Grey, who arranged for the land in the area to be bought from the local Māori people.
