Kopuaranga is bounded by the Tararua District Council area in the north, Whangaehu Valley Road in the east, Te Ore Ore Bideford Road, Black Rock Road, the Ruamahanga River, State Highway 2, Loop Line, the locality of Opaki-Fernridge, Upper Plain Road, Evans Road, Skeets Road, West Bush Road and Upper Manaia Road in the south, and the Waingawa River, the Carterton District Council area and the Horowhenua District Council area in the west. Kopuaranga is named from Māori words meaning 'deep hole' and 'shoal of fish'. It was formerly known as The Camp and Dreyerton.
